Meet your instructor

Hi, I’m Rebecca

I’m a UK-based natural dyer with over 10 years of experience. Oh, and I’m an avocado addict! I’ve spent years perfecting my avocado dye recipes.

I’m sure you’ve heard of my best selling dye book Botanical Colour at your Fingertips, or maybe you’ve read it?

I admit that I’m responsible for getting thousands of people hooked on avocado dye, and many other dye plants!

Natural dyeing is such a calming and grounding hobby and I’m on a mission to share this far and wide so you can experience it too!

I created this course to take the stress out of natural dyeing so you can make beautiful colours and enjoy the process.

You can begin natural dyeing — and it’s easier than you may think.

  • Frustrated that your dyes wash out of fabric quickly

To this…

  • Proud that your dyes last longer on fabric
  • Surprised that you don’t need much plant material to make dark dyes
  • Confident about the dyeing process
  • In control over your dye colours so you can repeat the process
  • Excited to try new plants and continue with your dye experiments

This course is for you if:

  • You’re looking to start a new hobby that’s mindful and creative
  • You’re able to save up 5-7 avocado skins and stones

This course is NOT for you if:

  • You don’t have access to any avocados at all. (Here’s a little tip: you can ask friends and family to collect them, and even ask at local cafes/restaurants!)
  • You’d like to dye perfectly repeatable colours

Yes, because I’ll show you my secrets for making the best dye! Follow my method and you’ll have the best chance of making bright shades.

Avocado dye has a history going back generations in South America, which I discuss in more detail in the first video. It’s most definitely a natural dye. If you follow the steps in the course, I’ll show you how to get the most out of your plant material and dye the strongest colours.

This video class also covers ink and paint making, as well as tie dye techniques for clothes. It’s all shown in a huge amount of detail every step is broken down for you.

My book gives you a simple dye pot recipe and an overview of plant dyeing with foraged plants and food waste ingredients.

Plus you get the bonus video class on hammering herbs onto fabric!!

Also in the ‘extra’ resources at the end, there are several new mordant recipes (for cellulose and silk) with a kind of flow diagram/article written to help you choose the most suitable mordant for you.

You can make an incredibly potent dye with just a small handful of stones. I often make dye pots with the skins and stones from 5-7 avocados, which I can save up in just a couple of weeks. You really don’t need a huge number.

One tip is to ask your friends and family if they can save them for you too! One of the videos will tell you the best way to wash and store the skins and stones, and you can explain this to your friends.

No, of course not. But if you follow my methods, then you have the best chance of making an intense dye colour. The colour varies throughout the season and also some varieties make different shades. The recipes in the course will give you the tools you need to begin your own dye projects. If you’re not in love with the colour after the first attempt, save up another few skins and stones and try again. Also, patience is key as the colour takes a couple of days to develop.

Please note that I cannot guarantee the colour that you make, but you have access to a private Facebook group where you can post any questions. I will help you troubleshoot and work out what to try next. Sometimes it’s simply a question of trying different water (e.g. rainwater or filtered water).

Yes, of course! After enrolling into the course, you’ll have access to my private Facebook group where you can post any questions and I’ll help you.
